Saltmarsh
Bek Saltmarsh - Artist & Designer
Bek Saltmarsh is a non-binary queer disabled artist of Aboriginal, Romani and Sephardic descent, who works mostly in ceramics, weaving and traditional crafts, but who is not shy about dabbling in other mediums.
Bek lives and works on Dja Dja Wurrung country with Bizbiz, a most handsome tabby, and Persephone, who might be a Russian Blue, isn't pregnant and who moved in unannounced. If Bek were an animal, they would be a lynx, a magpie or a fusion of both; regardless, there would be plentiful amounts of singing and sleep.
Bek’s art and design work has been shown or published at state, national and international levels, in locations as diverse as a Melbourne kitchen, to a logo for a roller derby exercise business in Oregon, USA, and illustrating an article on international science communication website, ‘I F*cking Love Science’. Their hope for their ongoing body of work is to continue to create pieces that help heal the trauma in their ancestral lineage, and to introduce audiences to topics and people that have gone uncelebrated or undiscussed in society, particularly regarding Aboriginality, being Romani, or living with disabilities, invisible or otherwise.
Bek would like to acknowledge and express their appreciation to their weaving teacher, master weaver Aunty Marilyne Nichols, and all their artistic mentors.
